Since when have bigoted statements been acceptable arguments against anything ? Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson called the mourners of the crew of the L’Acadien II “cigarette smoking apes“, Brigitte Bardot was convicted numerous times for her racist rants and their supporters post whatever comes to their minds, without any reservations, on blogs, message boards and media website comment boards. I’ve also seen people being harassed on Youtube simply because they were Japanese, Inuit or Norw

Myth No. 1 Raw Food is too strict, like a Religion It can’t be further than the truth! Raw Food is NOT a religion & it should not be treated or cause people to behave in any of that direction. It is about a way of eating to sustain our best possible health as well as for the best of our Mother Earth. Nurturing & protecting Mother Earth is crucial for our survival because it is our natural habitat, and we are so connected to it that mankind will perish if Mother Earth gets destroyed.

Today Jason and I went to my favorite Japanese Market and we got all kinds of goodies. We had a simple asian dinner with boiled edamame pods, miso soup with nori, brown rice to go with the rice, and kimchi. It was really good but I was still in the mood for asian food. So I came up with these bentos for Jason and I tomorrow. Unfortunately we won’t be able to have lunch together tomorrow, but at least we’ll both have similar meals! I made some carrot and avocado sushi and put a little container

Gene Pool, New York City's "Can Man." He also has an outfit of plastic bottles and cutlery. His fashion mission is to make us aware of our wasteful way of living. A couple of weeks ago at the Farmers Market I walked by a leafleteer. I don’t know what group, but the heading said something like, “You can’t eat meat and be an environmentalist.” I didn’t take one, so I don’t know the context, but it did get me thinking. My first thought was, gee, Wendell Berry isn’t an environmental

It’s one year and two months after my last post… and I’m officially a statistic - one of those failed “dieters” who put all the weight back on plus some. *sigh* I gotta go back to raw, vegan food. :-/ Around the time of my last post, I became stressed out because it was the end of the school year (I’m a teacher) and things were going on. I also figured since I’d done so well, I could ease up a wee bit. I eased up a bit too much, but it was okay until I went on a business trip the last two wee

I've been pretty dilligent with my exercise routine these past few months, which means I spend an hour every day working out. I'm not a morning person by any means so I do my workouts in the evening on week days. I had to come up with some pretty creative ways to eat without resorting to takeout, processed meals or having dinner at 10pm! I made this side dish tonight to complement my black bean burgers. You'll need: -Fingerling potatoes (1 per person) -Sweet potatoes of similar size as the f

We're not vegan yet, but we have been trying to eat more vegan and as you can see here, some of it is working out very, very well :) We know eating vegan is better for us and environmentally, for everyone else, too. Still it is so hard to give up a lot of foods you are used to eating, some on a daily basis! On Mango Power Girl I develop most of my own recipes, and you might have noticed that I have been creating more recipes without eggs or butter. Experiments can be frustrating, but as I exp

This past weekend Max and I drove north to Winnipesaukee to visit friends. Before heading out, I stopped by the farmer’s market in Union Square to pick up a few things to share for dinner. I know the image is out of focus–I was doubled over with tears when I snapped a shot— but are you as amused as I was that the young girl who sold me this very erect eggplant did not bat an eye? Or maybe I’m just a dirty old woman.

[I've decided to offer a mini-post every once in a while, for a dish that comes together incredibly quickly, or else is so easy to make that no recipe is required.  Here's today's "Flash in the Pan."] [Non-salsa version] Oooh. . . I’m feeling the crunch.  I wish I could say that’s the “crunch” of a lovely rice crisp-filled chocolate bar or the crunch of ice in a gin and tonic as I lounge by a pool, or even the crunch of my feet as they traverse a lovely woodsy trail with The Girls, but no;
